This is the oldest church in Komotini. It was built in 1800 on the foundations of another Byzantine church. The existence of the earlier church is testified by the French traveler Bellon. In the incredible architectural iconostasis of the church there are icons from 1741 and it is almost entirely out of wood. The floor is at a lower level than the round space, because during the Turkish occupation the buildings were not allowed to have the same height as the mosques. In the courtyard were found several parts of (old and newer) tombstones with written names or dates. The church celebrates on the 15th of August the day of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, when the believers can also kneel before the miraculous image.
